What does a PR agency actually do?

A PR agency helps a company earn attention and trust from the audiences that matter — journalists, customers, investors, partners and future hires — mostly through third-party channels it doesn't pay for directly.

The short answer

Advertising is attention you pay for. Public relations is attention you earn. A PR agency's job is to find what is genuinely interesting about your company, shape it into stories, and get those stories in front of the people and outlets that influence your audience.

The core work

  • Finding the story: identifying what makes the company newsworthy — a founder's perspective, a product milestone, a trend you can speak to, a problem you're solving.
  • Media relations: researching the right journalists, writing pitches and press releases, preparing spokespeople and managing interviews.
  • Thought leadership: building founders and executives into credible voices through bylined articles, podcasts, panels and speaking opportunities.
  • Messaging and positioning: making sure everyone describes the company the same clear way.
  • Content and social: turning coverage and ideas into content that keeps working after the news cycle moves on.
  • Partnerships and relationships: connecting the company with organisations, creators and communities that extend its reach.
  • Reputation and crisis readiness: preparing for difficult questions before they arrive.

What a PR agency doesn't do

A good agency won't promise specific coverage in specific outlets — editors decide what they publish. PR also isn't a replacement for a product people want or a sales process. It amplifies something real; it can't invent it.

How SC Communications approaches it

We work at the intersection of PR, media, partnerships and brand strategy: find the story, build the strategy, create the moment, then use each opportunity to create the next one.

Common questions

Is PR the same as marketing?
They overlap. Marketing usually controls the message and pays for placement; PR earns credibility through third parties such as journalists, partners and speakers.
Can a PR agency guarantee press coverage?
No honest agency can guarantee coverage. They can guarantee the work: strong angles, well-targeted pitches and prepared spokespeople.
