How to evaluate a PR agency

The right PR partner understands your business, tells you honestly what's newsworthy, and is clear about who will do the work and how progress will be measured.

Questions to ask

  • What do you think our story is — and what isn't newsworthy yet?
  • Who will actually work on our account day to day?
  • Which outlets, creators and communities fit our audience, and why?
  • What would the first 90 days look like?
  • How will we measure progress beyond a count of articles?
  • What do you need from us in time and access?

Red flags

  • Guaranteed placements in specific outlets.
  • A one-size-fits-all package that ignores your stage and goals.
  • Senior people in the pitch meeting, junior people on the work.
  • Success measured only by volume of coverage.

Judging fit

Look for a partner who understands how companies at your stage actually grow, who connects PR with partnerships and business development, and who will push back when an idea won't land. Chemistry matters: you'll be sharing unfinished plans with them.

Common questions

How should PR success be measured?
Agree measures tied to your goals: relevance of coverage, quality of audience, speaking and partnership opportunities, inbound interest and message consistency.
Boutique or large agency?
Boutique firms usually offer more senior attention and flexibility; large agencies offer scale. Early-stage companies often benefit from the former.
